I was so pleased yesterday to receive a great review from Brenda Gilchrist, who is the niece of Eleanor Brace whom John Steinbeck visited on his trip. I met Brenda on my journey when I visited the family home in Deer Isle, Maine, and she is mentioned in "Travels with Judy":
"Thank you for sending me your wonderful book, "Travels with Judy: In Search of Steinbeck’s America." What a treasure it is! I enjoyed every word! It is written with such enthusiasm and contagious joy—and marvelous humor.
Your description of Maine—and Deer Isle in particular—is deft and right on target. You captured the spirits of both Steinbeck and the island perfectly. You are a lovely writer, with a free, optimistic soul.
Of course, I reveled in your more than magnanimous description of me and my garden. I’m glad I gave such a positive impression. And Gabi, too. Your love of Judy glows throughout.
Thank you for mentioning Madeleine Burrage. By the way, the captions on p. 88 should say Stonington, not Deer Isle—for your 2nd edition!"
